LOGAN, Utah – The No. 5 University of Colorado hockey team defeated the No. 4 San Jose State Spartans 3-2 on Saturday at the George S. Eccles Ice Center in the third game of the Beehive Showcase.
The victory improves the Buffaloes record to 9-5-0-1 on the season and 2-1 in the weekend showcase that is hosted by Weber State University and Utah State University.
Senior goaltender Kevin Litinsky (8-6) made 36 saves in net for CU while freshmen Charlie Coleman and Chase Komatz and junior Alex Lencioni scored for the Buffs.
In CU’s last meeting with SJSU on Oct. 21, the Spartans got up early on the Buffaloes. This time around it was Colorado that scored early as Coleman beat San Jose State goalie Alessandro Mullane less than three minutes into the game to give CU the early advantage.
Komatz gave Colorado a 2-0 lead with a goal 2:21 left in the first period. Jordan Lockner and Bill Haege had assists on the goal.
San Jose State’s Sam Cimino scored with 2:21 left in the second stanza to make it a one-goal game, but Lencioni extended the Colorado advantage back to two with an early power play goal in the third.
Salvatore Barranco scored for the Spartans with 9:29 remaining in the contest, but the Buffs defense held strong the rest of the way to give CU the win.
Colorado will finish the Beehive Showcase on Sunday morning against No. 3 Eastern Washington in Ogden, Utah.
